What to see and sample in Cuneo and its surroundings
Those booking a holiday at the four-star Park Hotel Mondovì, in the valley of the mediaeval town of the same name, must not fail to devote a day to exploring Cuneo. Just a 30-minute drive from our hotel, Cuneo is the ideal starting point from where to explore this small region of Piedmont and its surroundings.
A typical, elegant Savoy town in the Piedmont region, it entices and fascinates those who decide to visit it, even for one day, as it breathes the air of the mountains and the Risorgimento in every corner. The best way to visit Cuneo is to walk through it on foot, getting lost in its alleyways, and passing beneath the gates, exploring its small but packed historic centre: a real treasure house of art, history and culture, blending with nature. The vast Piazza Galimberti on the one hand, and the Piazza Torino on the other, with the Via Roma in the middle, with its gateways. Then do not miss Contrada Mondovì, one of the most characteristic parts of the town, a real jewel, with its gateways, Gothic arches and typical mediaeval alleys, taking you back in time, imagining the remote ages. Visiting Cuneo means having your fill of art and culture, and also of good food.
This small Piedmont town is a really pleasant and authentic place, leaving lovers of oeno-gastronomic tourism in ecstasy, so it is worth taking the time to savour all the culinary specialities typical of the area. The province of Cuneo offers a cuisine inspired by the oldest traditions, whose recipes are passed from one generation to the next. It is impossible to resist the smell of the typical tagliolini al tartufo, which together with those made with agnolotti, are representative of the best of the prime dishes of Cuneo province. And then there are the chestnut delicacies, with IGP mark, an ingredient used for the sweets typical of the area, the cheeses and mouth-watering, meat-based main courses, above all the bollito misto and brasato al barolo.
The marketplaces of Cuneo
Thrift and flea markets, antiques, modern collectibles, craft and oeno-gastronomy. Depending on the time of year, visitors to Cuneo will be happily surprised by the wide variety of markets typical of this jewel of the Langhe region, and the various small towns in the province.
The marketplaces of Cuneo are a real tradition, valued by those who come especially for them, or who are simply passing through. An endless series of stalls, which, on particular days of the year, fill the central areas of the Savoy town: a date for the local people and more.
The Caffè Arione and the Cuneesi al Rum
The best way to start your day at Cuneo is certainly to have breakfast at the historic Caffè Arione, in the centre of Piazza Galimberti. Laid out inside in an individual workshop style, with original period briar rose mouldings outside, features recalling the past history of a place which is proud to be included among “Historic Places of Italy”, and over the years has attracted famous visitors such as Ernest Hemingway.
The Caffè Arione is the perfect place for breakfast or an aperitif, as well as for exploring the bakery products. The jewel in the crown of the workshop is certainly the renowned Cuneesi al Rum, little chocolates invented by Andrea Arione himself, the owner of the bar, a stock of which is an essential before leaving the city.
The Savoy houses
After exploring the alleyways of Cuneo, and tasting the local oeno-gastronomic specialities, visitors to this Piedmont province absolutely have to devote some of the day to exploring the various Savoy houses typical of the area. Among UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the most interesting and fascinating are the Castello Reale di Racconigi, the Castello di Pollenzo, the Castello di Govone, and the Reggia di Valcasotto.
Wonderful, enchanting places, where time seems stopped, leaving behind an elegant, luxurious atmosphere. Having admired these Savoy houses, there will be time to explore the lovely places around Cuneo. Among these, special mention can be made of Saluzzo, dominated by its castle, the mediaeval town of Mondovì, as well as Roero and Alba.
